8 Lists to Check before a Long-distance Drive

8 Lists to Check before a Long-distance Drive

No matter if you’re driving a new or an old car. A car checkup is definitely a must before a long-distance drive. Here are the checkup lists.

1. Tire and pressure check. Check that there is no hole in the tire and that tire thread depth must be higher than 1.6 mm. Make sure that tire pressure is in a proper amount and don’t forget to fill air pressure in the spare tire.

2. Break system check. Make sure the thickness of your break pad including the backing plate is higher than 7 mm. If thinner, consider changing your break pad.

3. Oil engine check. Make sure that you have enough oil for the engine. Park your car on level ground. Open the radiator bonnet. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean. Put the dipstick all the way in and withdraw it to check the level at the tip. The oil level should be between F and L, or Max and Min mark.

4. Cooling system check. Wait until the engine is warm. Check water level in the tank. The water level should be between FULL and LOW. If water level is lower than LOW, add coolant until the level goes up to FULL. Make sure to use the same type of coolant that you used before. Use distilled or drinking water in case of no coolant.

5. Battery check. Notice the signs of dying battery—your engine doesn’t start, lights are getting dimmer, and electric windows work slowly. A typical battery lasts for 1 and a half – 2 years. If your battery is older than that, it is dying. Consider changing if the voltage is too low.

6. Lights check. Make sure that headlight, high bean, taillight, turn signals and break signal still work.

7. Keep car manual in the car. It’s better just to know the basic safety check if you run into trouble.
